I don’t think you are stupid, but you and Nature acted stupidly by bringing up a sensitive subject in an undelicate way and inappropriate place, and then refusing to acknowledge that it’s a problem. A simple apology “Sorry, guys, we didn’t think it through, it won’t happen again” would have avoided most of the trouble you are having now.
